Dear Smart Girl,

I recently started a new job, and I am very attracted to one of the guys in my department.  We’re on different teams within the department and we hardly ever work together.  I found out today that he’s single, and I’m thinking about asking him out.  I’ve never dated a coworker before, but I’ve heard that it’s a bad idea from some of my friends.  What do you think?

-On the Market, MD

Dear Market,

Your friends are right and you would do well to listen to them.  Dating a coworker is usually a very, very bad idea.   It may start out to be great and you might have an easy time of keeping your relationship from interfering with your professional lives, but eventually, you two will have a fight or something will happen which will make keeping your work and love lives seperate exceedingly difficult.  And what happens if you go out on a date and you’re really into him, but he’s not feeling the same way?  Or vice versa?  That’ll be awkward.  Or what if you two break up?  You’ll have to continue seeing each other at work which is enough to drive even the smartest girl crazy.  Having said that, this is my advice to you: Just think it through.  Every situation is going to be different, and if you think about all of the ways in which it could go horribly awry and you still think that you want to go through with it, then go for it.  Just keep in mind that you’ve been cautioned.

Dear Smart Girl,

I have a question regarding my cat.  She was a stray and started showing up on my porch a couple months ago.  I think she used to be somebody’s pet because they clipped her nails and she’s real friendly.  I started feeding her and then adopted her.  I can’t tell if she has been spayed or not and lately she has been acting real weird.  She will hiss at you if you pet her tummy which she used to love and she goes back and forth being nice one second and being mean the next and she rolls around on the carpet and eats a lot.  What is going on with her?

Dear Crazy,

Take your cat to a vet immediately.  It’s always a good idea to get new cats checked out. The issue with her tummy could be any number of things; some of which are more serious than others such as internal bleeding. And, since you have no idea whether or not she’s been spayed, you should have her checked for that too and spay her as soon as you possibly can if she hasn’t had the surgery already. All of this could be related to the fact that your cat is in heat, or that she is already pregnant. Only a vet can tell you one way or the other what’s going on. Make an appointment right away! Also, I believe that in your area, the Oregon Humane Society offers spay and neuter assistance. Check it out.
